Global Projects

GII's core business is conducting seismic field Acquisition surveys, Data Processing and Interpretation for our clients in the Oil and Gas Industry around the globe. Since 1957 we have operated complex projects in different terrain and environments; from the deserts in the Middle-East, the jungles of Africa, rural and urban areas in Europe  to the hilly plains of North-East India.

Sicily

Between September 2019 and April 2020, The Geophysical Institute of Israel executed a Land 2D and 3D seismic project in the Fiume Tellaro concession in Sicily, Italy.

During the project 167 sqkm of 3D seismic data and 225 lkm of 2D seismic data were acquired. The work area was dominated by agricultural fields, orchards and olive groves with many bridges, historic stone walls and modern gates dividing them. The topography is hilly and steep in some locations. During this project, The GII operated a Vibroseis and Node based crew equipped with the INOVA Quantum recording system and 5 Mini Vibroseis (UniVib 1 PLS 326) energy sources made by INOVA Geophysical. To complement the seismic data, LVL, gravity and magnetic data acquisition crews were operated as well.

GII executed strict HSE protocols in line with industry standards and strict Italian regulations. Furthermore, the project culminated at the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and GII's crew and personnel underwent rigorous training and working procedure re-structuring to minimize inter-human contact. The project ended with ZERO COVID-19 infections.

Tanzania

During 2013 and 2014, The Geophysical Institute of Israel executed a Land and Transition Zone High Resolution 2D seismic project in South-East Tanzania on behalf of Maurel and Prom.

The project was over 550 line kilometers long made up by dozens of seismic lines in four different areas. The survey area encompassed tough mangroves and tidal flats as well as isolated island surveys.  Therefore, using dynamite explosives was the best choice for the energy source. We created over 22,000 shot hole drills for the explosive charges using specially designed man portable drill machines. Dealing with the environmental conditions and predatory animals was made top priority by the management team and security measures were in place to ensure safety of the crew and equipment. The project lasted 14 months with more than 1.5 million man work hours and had no significant safety or security incidents.

The GII participated in seismic processing as well and the data quality has led to a significant gas discovery at Mnazi Bay.

Ethiopia

During 2011 and 2012, The Geophysical Institute of Israel (GII) carried out a vast seismic acquisition project in the Ethiopia for SOUTHWEST ENERGY (UK) Ltd.

The project was executed in the Ogaden Desert license (Blocks 9, 9A and 13) and consisted of of 27 2D seismic lines with a total length of 1641 Km.

The flat terrain were ideal for GII's desert Vibroseis crew. The vast amounts of data were fully in-field processed and 2D stacks were produced on a daily basis as work progressed. The project was accompanied by Low Velocity Layer (LVL) surveys using Refraction and Downhole techniques.

As usual in our overseas projects, the GII employed nearly 100 local workers from the villages in the prospect area. The local team trained in technical and Health, Safety and Environment procedures and became part of the seismic crew - contributing to the success of this seismic project.

Security forces of the Ethiopian Army escorted the seismic crew, maintaining a secure and safe environment throughout the project.

The Geophysical Institute of Israel has been working in Georgia since 1997 on numerous projects.

Our clients include CanArgo-Georgia and Georgian Britain Oil Company (GBOC), JKX UK, National Oil Co. Switzerland, Strait Oil and Gas (SOG) and Range Resources Ltd. A total of 1,275 line kilometers of 2D seismic have been acquired by GII in Georgia using vibroseis, dynamite explosive and mixed sources.

Our experience with the local people and contractors in different regions of central Georgia (Sachkhere, Chiatura, Tkibuli, Zstafoni, Kutaisi) has been exemplary and without incident.

In the 2012 survey, for example, over 3000 drill holes were used for the explosive sources, many of them in rough terrain

In addition to the seismic acquisition, GII was awarded the Seismic Processing as well as accompanying Magnetic and Gravity surveys. This data added greatly to the interpretation of the subsurface structure.

We have had the opportunity to work in all weather conditions in Georgia, including difficult snow, rain and fog. Despite difficult conditions, no severe injuries (Lost Time Injuries LTI) ocurred.

Congo (DRC)

In 2010, The Geophysical Institute of Israel was awarded the tender to conduct a 2D seismic acquisition project for oil investigation in western basins of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on behalf of EnerGulf (Houston, Texas, USA).

The project consisted had a total length of 203 line kilometers, most of which passed through dense jungle. Due to the difficult accesibility situation and the inclination to preserve the natural rainforest, the GII opted for use of dynamite as seismic energy source. Roughly 3,400 shallow shot holes were drilled using custom built portable man held and tractor mounted drills. The project incorporated more than 350 local workers and over 20 local sub-contractors and service providers who were trained to work safely and efficiently on seismic teams.
